My Story

By Jacquie Button

Hey thank you for the opportunity that we had to win the $124 within our group. I am glad I could contribute to the promoting of seatbelts. I started out doing the contest for the money but on may 1st I had the biggest wake up call ever. I knew seatbelts were important and that they save lives but I didn’t know how effective they were till my own life was on the line.

I have always tried to remember to put on my seatbelt but there would be an occasional time that I would forget! Then when we started the seatbelt enforcement I never forgot because I wanted to set a good example to show I really supported the law I was enforcing. I am so thankful for our group and the good values it helps me uphold! When I woke up from the crash I grab my seatbelt and held it close to my chest and after I started to freak out I then took off my seatbelt and opened my door. I was going to get out of the car but I didn’t because I remember all the different things the DCSO deputies have taught me about injuries and making them worse by moving after an accident.

I look back on the accident and remember all the things that Harvey and you told me about seatbelts I really appreciate you both for all the facts and things you had to say about seatbelt use. I really try to take to heart things adults tell me because I know they tell me things because they care and don’t want me to get hurt even though I may think otherwise. Thank you for caring and I am glad I still get a yearto work with you and get to help promote things with you. I consider you and the sheriff heroes because heroes save lives and as far as I am considered you both saved my life. It was because the things you two recently told me about seatbelts that I belted up at 6:30 that morning and 5 minutes later my life was saved by that seatbelt which you two promoted. I know that seatbelts really do save lives and so do good friends. Thank you for being ones of those good friends.

Ever since the accident I started promoting seatbelt use, not because of the money but because I want to be there for someone to help save there life...I know I probably wont ever hear if my postersare the reason some ones life was spared (i know they help though) and that may be the case with almost all the promoting that we do but I thought I would let YOU know how much you mean to me and that your promoting saved a life on May 1, 2009 at 6:35 am. I have been watching seatbelt ads on Youtube and theres one that reminds me of my accident (in a good way). I know for a fact I would not be alive today if it were not for that seatbelt I was wearing....I would have gone out of the passenger window head first into the semi trucks cement block that it had for a bumper. Instead, all that went out the passenger window was glass and one of the seatbelt signs I had up in the window was torn in half and blew around among all the glass that laid on grant roadand the picture had a person going through the windshield and it said chance takers are accident makers...it would of been a tragic accident if it I didn’t practice what I had been preaching!

I know that it happened to me for a reason and I am not sure why...but I think it is because certain people go through life learning lessons and are supposed to share them with others, so not everyone has to experience the same thing, which in the end saves lives. I am happy I can share this experience with the world. I was happy to hear I won the $124 debt card but only because I know that I truly earned it for the right reason and not for greed. I am excited for next year to do the seatbelt ticket thing again so I can share my new experience with the HS students. Thank you again for everything! I am proud to be a part of TATU, Power of Youth and to be a DCSO cops kid. You rock hope to see you soon! Let me know if you need help doing anything during the summer.
