Should You Buy the UPPA Baby Mesa Infant Car Seat? - The Most Complete Review

1. Design

uppababy mesa i-size car seat review

I decided to start my detailed description from the outlook and slowly build my way into the core of the UPPA Baby car seat. So, what we have here is a rear-facing infant car seat with a base, weighing 18.9 pounds in total and 9.9 pounds without the base. It supports newborns from four to thirty-five pounds in weight and up to thirty-two inches in height.

The seat features a smart design that allows easy installation, adjustments, and stroller-compatibility.

What we can conclude for now is that this car seat is a bit lighter than other leading infant restraint systems on the market. And, since it can be detached from the base and used as a carrier, it means a lot that it is not too heavy or bulky.

So, at first glance, the seat seems promising, but let’s dive deeper.

2. Installation

UPPA Mesa has been awarded the five-star installation rating from NHTSA. In the world of car seats, this means a lot.

The reason for such a high score is the innovative smart installation system that UPPA integrated into this seat.

It is the only child restraint system on the market with a tightness indicator and self-retracting LATCH connectors. Namely, there is a window on the car seat that goes from green to red to indicate whether the car seat is installed correctly. Importantly, it can be installed with a seat belt as well.

The base’s bottom is finished to prevent car damage. There are multiple foot positions for a perfect fit. Like other leading infant car seats, UPPA Mesa has level indicators that help you position it at the right angle.

Even If I wanted, I would not be able to find a single complaint about the installation; it truly is flawless.

3. Adjustability

To decide whether a car seat is honestly a high-end one, I check the adjustability.

UPPA Mesa includes the infant inserts that can be removed as your baby grows and develops. Additionally, it offers four footrest positions for perfect leveling and an adjustable headrest. The no-rethread harness moves with the headrest, while the crotch buckle has two adjustable positions.

On top of everything, it is compatible with VISTA or CRUZ strollers. Together, these items create a perfect travel system. You can release the carrier from a stroller with a single click of the button. The seat also includes an extendable, hideaway canopy that provides UPF 25+ protection.

To rate the adjustability, I give UPPA Mesa 10/10. Absolutely effortless to use, this seat is the embodiment of convenience!

4. Safety

Here we are, at the critical segment of every child restraint system. Luckily, UPPA Mesa is as safe as a child seat can be. The seat meets federal safety standards and can be used in an airplane. It comes with a lifetime warranty and includes no chemically-treated materials.

In fact, this is the only car seat on the market that is not treated with a fire retardant. On the contrary, it is entirely made of Merino wool, with integrated side impact protection and EPP foam for maximum comfort and safety.

From the aspect of safety, this car seat is secure as a bunker!

5. Comfort and Maintenance

Given that materials include no added chemicals, this infant seat is very pleasant on the skin. Thick padding and infant inserts provide the necessary comfort and neck support, so you don’t have to worry about the head slump.

As for the maintenance, the seat fabric is removable and washable.

6. The Showdown!

By now, we have concluded that UPPA doesn’t play. Their seats are honestly reliable and definitely worthy of the high price. But so are Peg Perego and Britax seats.

In the continuation, we’ll compare the UPPA Mesa with the two leading infant seats from the competing brands: Primo Viaggio 4/35 and Britax B-Safe 35.

All three seats have the same weight range from four to thirty-five pounds, and all 3 are compatible with the strollers. On the other hand, while Primo Viaggio and UPPAbaby have identical prices, Britax is considerably cheaper.

UPPA baby is the lightest model of all three and the only model with a tightness indicator, while only the Primo Viaggio Infant Seat has an adjustable side impact protection.

It is hard to choose a winner of these three because, besides these small differences, all three seats have pretty much the same design. They are safe, FAA-approved, and genuinely comfortable, so whichever you choose, you can’t go wrong. My favorite is definitely Britax, for it has proven durable, sturdy, and comfortable without breaking my bank.

Getting back to UPPAbaby, here is my final list of Pros and Cons:

Pros
  • Somewhat lightweight
  • Tightness indicator
  • Self-retracting LATCH connectors
  • Easy to install
  • Comfortable
  • Safe
  • No chemically-treated materials
  • FAA-approved
Cons
  • Expensive

Final Thoughts

To conclude, I got nothing but compliments for UPPA. This brand makes genuinely high-end products. Using the latest smart technology, they managed to bring safety to another level without compromising the simplicity of use.

Everything is one click away on this seat, and your child will most definitely enjoy it. If there’s one word to describe this car seat, it would be excellence.

Therefore, if you can afford the high price, definitely go for it!
